City Baseball's coaching staff is led by Wes Long, Club President and Director of Coaching. City is fortunate to have longstanding relationship with some of the area's best coaches, many having experience as players and coaches in the college and professional ranks.
City's philosophy is to have a common approach across teams. As an example our Fall Ball and Off Season Program is run by a small number of our top instructors who work with every ball player in the Club. Instruction is designed at different ages to be consistency from team-to-team as players matriculate through the program.
President of City Baseball, Director of Coaching and Instruction
Wes is responsible for all baseball operations club wide with emphasis on the development of players and coaches. Wes was a two-time All American shortstop and pitcher at the University of Alabama at Huntsville where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Drafted in the 2004 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Oakland A's, Wes subsequently played 8 years of professional baseball. He has also spent time Coaching professionally for the Chicago Cubs, Scouting for the Oakland Athletics, and has served as an Assistant Coach on Donny Harrel's staff at Seattle University.
Wes has earned his reputation in Seattle's youth baseball community as a premier teacher of the game of baseball. Wes' focus is both on developing players and coaches always with an eye on the Club's objective of developing its players within a continuity of instruction from the youngest ball player to the most senior.
Wes also prides himself on leading the Club's efforts to prepare players for playing baseball at the next level. Wes designed the Club's College Planning Program with the intent of maximizing the opportunity for the Club's ball players to compete for college roster spots.
Todd Linden - Off Season Program Lead and Underclass Head Coach
Todd is responsible for running the off-season program for the Club's most competitive teams. Other the years he has also served as the field manager for the Club's most competitive teams aged 14 to 18. Coach Linden has a substantial role in City Baseball's College Planning Program. He works directly with Club underclass man who are projectable college commits.
Todd was a 3 sport athlete (Football / Basketball / Baseball) at Central Kitsap High School where he graduated in 1998. He went on to play baseball at the University of Washington (1999-2000) and after an exceptional Cape Cod league season (.535 slugging) the summer of 2000 he made the move to Louisiana State University where in his Junior year he played in 65 of 66 games, BA .312, slugging .609, 256 ABs, 14 doubles, and 20 hrs.
Drafted in the 2001 MLB draft as the 41st overall pick by the San Francisco Giants. Todd played 11 years of professional baseball, including 5 MLB seasons, and 2 seasons in Japan. In one season in Fresno (AAA) Todd hit 30 hrs, avg .321, slugging .682, with 80 RBIs in 95 games.
JoJo Howie - Senior Instructor and Underclass Pitching Coach
JoJo joined City Coaching Staff in 2018 as a Manager of the 18 Showcase Team Manager. JoJo has risen in the baseball coaching community quickly since his graduation from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, in 2015.
After serving as the Pitching Coach for two seasons ('16 and '17), JoJo took the helm at Everett Community College as the Head Coach at the end of the 2017 season. JoJo is still the youngest baseball Head Coach in the Northwest Athletic Conference – composed of 28 junior college baseball programs throughout WA and OR. In it's 2019 campaign EvCC won the North Division with a 19-4 record and played in the conference Championship tournament final loosing to Columbia Valley.
At Bellevue Christian HS JoJo was part of four consecutive Emerald City League Championships, a 3 time All Conference player, and named in his senior year the ECL player of the year and to the All State first team, hitting .494 with 8 hrs. Turning down an opportunity to be a two sport athlete at Concordia University, baseball and basketball, JoJo dedicated himself to being a pitcher and started his college career at Everett Community College. He excelled at ECC leading the pitching staff in 2013, a NWAC Championship Season for EvCC, with a 9-1 record and an ERA of 1.99.
JoJo went on two pitch two years at Virginia Commonwealth University. His senior year at VCU the Rams qualified for the NCAA tournament winning Divisional and Regional rounds to fall short in the SuperRegional to the University of Miami. In this season JoJo led the pitching staff with 100 innings pitched while posting a 7-3 record and a 3.15 ERA - 78 SO v. 26 BB. Shortly after this season an arm injury precluded what otherwise promised to be an opportunity to play professional baseball. JoJo followed up his VCU career by accepting the Pitching Coach position at ECC.
KC Herren - 8U Coach
KC joined the City Coaching and Instruction staff in 2013. In 2014, he assisted Wes Long, City's President and DOC, coaching the City 13 Navy team winning the Sandy Koufax State Tournament in July and the 2015 13 Navy team winning the USSSA State Championship. With his oldest son now a ball player in the Club KC has intentionally focused his attention on the Club's youngest teams.
KC was drafted in the 2nd round by the Texas Rangers in 2004 out of Auburn High School, 51st overall. After a 6-year professional baseball career in the Rangers organization, KC attended the University of Washington graduating with a degree in Business Finance. While at UW, KC also played 2 years for the Husky Football team as a special teams player and defensive back.
KC's family also rich in athletics, his father was also a part of an MLB draft, drafted in the 3rd round, 61st over all, in the '71 January Regular Phase. KC's younger sister played soccer at the US Naval Academy and is currently serving her country as a Captain in the Marine Corp!
KC, financial advisor, part of the Private Wealth Management professionals at RW Baird in Seattle where he and his wife are raising their three children.
Vondell Johnson - Senior Instructor and Team Manager
Vondell has been with City Baseball since 2015 and he has demonstrated a knowledge of baseball and an ability to manage a baseball game that has placed him with the Club's most valued Coaches and Instructors. Vondell was the Head Coach of our prestigious 18U Showcase team during the 2018 and 2019 Season. Johnson helped over 30 players prepare for the collegiate ranks during those two seasons. He has skipper young/talented Navy and Green squads, populated with projectable college players at all levels, at 14, 15, 16, and 18.
After graduating from Heritage High School in Lynchburg, VA, Vondell attended Liberty University for a season and then Averett University in Danville, VA for three. At Averett he played second base for three years. During this time, Vondell made the All-Tournament team in 2003 and was named First Team All-USA South Conference in 2004. Vondell graduated in a B.A. in Education.
Vondell has over 15 years experience in coaching various roles teaching at baseball academies, managing club and travel baseball teams, and coaching high school and college players.
Vondell and his wife moved to Seattle in October 2015 as Coach Johnson continued to pursue his teaching career. Vondell heads the Phy Ed department at Green Lake Elementary School in north Seattle. He and his wife have two young daughters and reside in Magnolia.
Rick Relano - Senior Instructor and Team Manager
Rick’s first year with City Baseball was 2014. Rich takes an academic approach to coaching baseball - taking advantage of every opportunity to improve his skills and learn in the profession of coaching baseball. His dedication to the craft has led to his rapidly growing set of responsibilities at City Baseball. Rick joined the full-time staff in 2019.
Rick has Managed teams at all levels in the Club. His presence in the Club’s off-season training program, 11/1 to 3/15, is pervasive across the entire Club – all levels. Rick knows every ball player in the Club enabling him to consult other members of leadership on player development. Rick’s role is central to what makes City Baseball a program and not simply a set of youth baseball team franchises sharing not much more than the same jersey.
Rick grew up in Federal Way playing baseball and soccer and graduated from Federal Way High School in 2005. Rick grew up playing ball with the McColgan brothers often coached by the Federal Way institution Dean McColgan. Rick first coached at City with Chris McColgan brother of Mount Tahoma HS Principal and baseball coach David McColgan.
Rick Head Coached the Ingraham High School Junior Varsity for two years in 2017 and 2018, and the Bainbridge High School Junior Varsity in 2019.
Jake Phillips - Head Coach 15U to 18U
Coach Phillips joined the City Baseball Coaching Staff in 2019. His fire and love for the game are felt throughout the Club. Jake has Managed as the Head Coach 18U Green and and 15 Navy.
Jake has held to post of Associate Head Coach at Pierce Community College since 2017. His responsibilities include recruiting, working with hitters/infielders and coaching third base.
As a player, Jake played two years at Pierce in 2011 and 2012, winning an NWAC Championship with his team and being the deciding pitcher in 2012. After his two years at Pierce he played at Campbellsville University (Ky.). After his senior year in college he played one season in the Independent baseball team in the Pecos League in Arizona.
Brian Foreman - Senior Instructor / Roaving Coach
Brian is among City Baseball's most senior and experienced instructors, working with players individually and in groups, across the club at all ages. The City teams he has managed in his 5 years at City have been winners reflecting his competitive nature. His 2017 14 Navy squad won its last 5 tournaments consecutively - starting with the Seattle Elite League season ending Championship! A City Record! Coach Foreman will be taking a season off as a Head Coach this year, He will be roaving this summer and assisting during our tournament schedule.
Brian was a three-sport athlete for Skyline High School, playing basketball, baseball and quarterback for the football team. While at Skyline, Brian played quarterback and won the State championship and was invited to the East West All-State game. Brian also works with young quarterbacks in the area through the Gervais Passing Academy.
Following high school, Brian pitched for three years, under the leadership of the legendary Hall of Fame College Coach Ed Cheff, at Lewis & Clark State University in Lewiston, Idaho.
Brian is newly married to Krissy, a college basketball player and good thing to as he's joined an athletic family: Brian's Dad Phil - 4 year UW football starter, captain; Grandpa McNamee also played football at UW: Brian's three younger brothers were recognized as All State athletes - in a mix of football, basketball, and baseball.
Brian works in the medical insurance industry in Seattle.
Henry Carson - 13s Head Coach & Off Season Instructor
Henry played for Wes Long as a City Baseball Player from his 14u through his 18u year. Graduate of Shorewood High School, Henry played for Coach Wyatt Tonkin highlighted by play in the 2019 State Tournament. Coach Carson's primary position was catcher, playing in two Junior College programs, Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, CO, and Shoreline CC, majoring in Kinesiology and Exercise Science.
Coach Carson has taken an oversized role on Wes Long's staff working through the Off Season Program and with multiple teams Head Coach 13 Royal in the 2021 season.
Coach Anthony Naso - 16s Head Coach
Coach Naso joined the Coaching Staff in 2018. Anthony served as the Graduate Assistant Coach at Seattle University while he worked toward a Master Degree in Sports Management. Coach Naso competed his degree graduating in the spring of 2021. His main responsibilities with the Club include working with pitchers and has been a major contributor with the installation of advanced analytics into the pitching staff.
Anthony as also served as Team Manager and Head Coach 15U and 16U.
Coach Naso has 8 years of College Coaching experience at SU, Chaffey College, Clarion University and Canisius College. Naso has also coached collegiate summer league for the Alexandria Aces as well as multiple years of HS select baseball.
Prior to his coaching career, Anthony was a standout pitcher at Slippery Rock University. Naso also pitched one year professionally for the Mampaey Hawks of the Netherlands Professional Baseball League.
Dale Griffith - 15 Navy Co-Head Coach
Dale was a multisport athlete for Foster High School in Tukwila, WA, playing baseball, football, and basketball. Graduating from High School Dale was a recipient of the Bill and Melinda Gates - Achievers Scholarship. He obtained his AA from Bellevue Community College in General Arts & Science before transferring to Eastern Washington University where he graduated Cum Laude studying Early Childhood Education with a minor in Sociology.
Coach Griffith is the Graduation Success Coordinator and Head Softball Coach at Ballard High serving as the creative liaison between students, teachers and parents in hopes of bridging the academic gap and or relationship barriers that may exist. Dale joined the City Staff in 2019.
Jared Daniels - 15U Navy Co-Head Coach
Jared joined City Baseball in 2018. Jared is currently the Ballard High School JVC Baseball Coach and Varsity Wrestling Coach. He works at Ballard High School as an Instructional Assistant within the Special Education Department. Jared excelled as a two sport athlete at Lynden High School in Lynden, WA.
Jon Calderwood - Team Head Coach
Jon was born and raised in Seattle. A multi-sport athlete he has been a dedicated youth coach since 2006. He started his time on City's staff in 2014 and has been in the position of Head Team Coach and a number of levels.
In 2011, he was hired to coach baseball at Ingraham. He currently is the Head Coach of the Ingraham Softball program and its boys Golf team. Jon has supported the Ballard Little League as a coach and Board Member.
Sonny Badaluco - Team Head Coach & Off-Season Instructor
Sonny is back to City Baseball after a 5 year Hiatus. He coached our 14U Fall Ball team and assisted in winter workouts this off-season. Previously, Sonny led the 14U Gold to the WSSBL State Championship in 2014.
Badaluco has spent the last five years in California serving as the Head Coach for the Colusa County Channel Cats Sr. Legion Baseball Team. Sonny also was the Head Football coach for CC High School (2015-2018) and served as a pre-educator in the CC school system.
We are very excited to have Sonny back in the program, he will also be pursuing his MBA at the University of Washington during this time.
Todd joined the City Baseball coaching staff in 2107. Todd is a Pacific Northwest native with 16+ years of coaching experience in Little League and Club Baseball (ages 8-16U). Todd has over 35 years of playing experience, including 24 consecutive seasons in the Puget Sound Sr. Baseball League. In addition to local league play, Todd pitches in National MSBL tournaments where he has won 2 World Series Championships (in 2007 and 2014) playing with and against former professional and collegiate ball players.
Andy keeps himself busy as a manufacturing engineer in Woodinville, WA
Zach was an athlete at Sunnyside High School, Sunnyside, WA, playing baseball, football and basketball. After graduating in 07’ he attended Yakima Valley CC to play baseball. His first year of coaching is 2019 when he joined the Ballard baseball program as a volunteer coach with the freshman team and joined the City Baseball Coaching Staff managing 10u and 11u teams. program coaching the 10u gold team. He graduated from Seattle Central CC, and from Grand Canyon University with a B.A. in History for Secondary Education.
Alex Cochrane - 11U Navy Assistant Coach
Alex joined the City Baseball staff in 2017. Alex graduated from Seattle’s Ingraham High School in 2017 where he was a 3 year letterman and 2 year captain in baseball playing both Outfield and Infield. Alex was a 3 sport Scholar Athlete (Baseball, Cross Country, and Diving) and was recognized as Ingraham’s “Male Athlete of the Year” his Senior year.
Alex attended the University of Washington in 2017 and then took a gap year to attend a Baseball Academy in North Carolina. Alex will be completing undergraduate studies and playing baseball at New York University. Alex severs as his Father's Assistant Coach, Todd, Cochrane, as available.
Aiden Welch - Team Coach 13U to 16U
Coach Welch has held a number of positions at City Baseball dating back to 2018. As a Club Alumni, graduating from Ballard High school in 2017, he knows the ways of the Club. Following his first year of college baseball Aidan began as a summer roving Assistant Coach. Since then he has Managed teams at 13U and 16U.
Aiden Welch plays NCAA baseball at University of Northern Colorado – Pueblo, middle infield. As a Sophomore Aidan secured the regular SS duties playing in 44 of 46 game, with 127 ABs, BA of .331, OB% .432, and slugging .538. Aidan is majoring in business management with a sports emphasis.
Aidan has played summer baseball in two collegiate summer leagues including the Cascade League (for Portland) and on his current 2019 roster in the West Coast League for the Yakima Pippins.
City Baseball proudly claims Aidan as an Alumni who has returned to the Club in spot assignments to contribute substantially to our coaching staff.
At Ballard HS Aidan hit .309 in 54 career games with a .431 OB%.
Nate Spear - 9u to 12U Head Coach
Nate Spear played NCAA baseball at University of Northern Colorado – Pueblo as a pitcher. Posted his first college win on May 5, 2018 where he struck out 7 over 5 innings. Over 9 games his Freshman year at CSUP he averaged 9.9 strikeouts per game.
Nate graduated from Bishop Blanchet High School where he was a 3-year varsity letter winner for the Braves - Career ERA of 2.07 Including being undefeated over 5 starts his senior year where he led the team with a 1.83 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. Hit .280 his Senior year with 3 doubles and a home run posting a OBP of .478. He caught a career 43 games throwing out 9 runners… Metro Honorable Mention recognition behind the plate as a senior for the Braves… Named to the 2017 Perfect Game Preseason All-American and All-Region Teams.
Nate is part of a group of recent City Baseball Alumni who have demonstrated the commitment, drive, and talent required to contribute valuable roles within our Coaching Staff. Nate is the oldest of 3 brothers, all baseball players at City Baseball.
